Very informative interview! I learned a lot more about the show thanks to Sean’s acute insight! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Thank you for watching!
Didn't get a chance on the poll but top 3: Super Specs, Dark Music, Jake and the Leprechaun. Bottom 3: Hungry Hounds, Nightly Neighbors, Prom Queen.
This was a forgettable episode. Could have been so much better!
This episode freaked me out as a kid. I recently tried to look up the older actress to see how old she was back in 95-96. Couldn't find her. The actress who played the main girl disappeared from acting.
The actress who played Ms Valenti was 35 when the episode aired.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow Was that a different actress when we saw the older version of the character in the mirror?
@@KentPetersonmoney Yes, it was played by another actress who had played a hag type character in the episode, the Tale of Watcher's Woods.
Seem like this episode aired the week after Tucker joined. I was only 9 back then so maybe I'm remembering things differently. I do remember back then using my calculator to see how long ago 1919 was. Back then it was 75 years. That is now 105 years. Didn't realize Sam was only a year older than Tucker. For some reason Sam seemed so much older than Tucker to me back then. JoAnna Garcia Swisher(Sam) the only one who was a real American I think. I never knew most of the cast where Candian until recently.
Yeah, the Midnight Society cast were very convincing Americans. It was only some of the day-players who would reveal themselves through their accent.
Sean is one of the most generous souls you could meet. He’s a hilarious gentleman & scholar. Thank you for this
I couldn't agree with your more! He answered my query the same day I sent it and gave me the opportunity to interview him the very next day. I also had no intention of taking up more than 30 minutes of his time, but he was so cool about everything that we talked for over an hour. He is an awesome human being!
Well it's *obvious* she was trying toz kill her son. She dropped every last spare cent into getting the hotel She needs to recoup that niney fir the time being *somehow* and many insurance companies pay out more if the death is "accidental."
I knew it!
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow That was *dark* of me wasn't it?
You're right about the lack of tension. Could never take this villain seriously ('no talking in the library' being menacing is funny to me). Was very hammy so at least it stood out. Concept wasn't bad. Good point about her not targeting the loudest kids but she was absolute about it, not targeting the loudest sounds but any sound. She probably couldn't target loud sounds if her machine was overwhelmed by the kid's toy.
This episode ahem, for me, sucks. It always sucked although you are right as to your reasons for liking it. A cut scene for instance you liked and also likely correctly tying this in to the Tucker Gary relationship are elements I don't really pay attention to when I watch media. For me, give me an inventive plot, that is the most important thing. Instead, we get a boring bad vs good kid rivalry where one makes up some kind of villain that actually comes to life. In fact, logically, that makes no sense. How is it that the good kid just mentions this clown and it comes to life? We have to assume it was in the bad kid's guilt ridden imagination but that makes it feel less real and less likely, plus it should have been indicated this was all imaginary. The clown's motives are: 'you're a bad kid, ha ha ha.' Just seems overly simplistic. The fact the clown kept changing physical appearance also made no sense. Just a vacuous mess to me. I do agree that the protagonist acts well, the mother over the top. And the shopkeeper is delightfully odd. There have been days where in my head ring his voice: 'sorry, come back when you got da money!' 'for you, 50 dollars!' Other than that, most of the action resembles a zebo style haunting, however, this time, without the suspense which was created by zebo being largely invisible. This one is all in your face which perhaps appeals to you more and me less.
I don't know if my wife watched this as a kid but I did and I really enjoyed it even though my geography is horrible haha 😂
Haha! That was the magic of this show. You didn't have to be good at geography to love it.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow true and my wife did watch the show I asked her yesterday
Never cared for this one that much when younger. But boy has it grown on me. There's just something about all the quirky characters. The universe the protagonist inhabits is already messed up and that is part of the fun for me. Hooper is such a great side character. It's one of those episodes where even though the plot is ridiculous it is inventive enough. Just an example of one of our differences. You wish that they played out the action sequence of the grinner and main character in the comic book world. I am happy they didn't do that. Why? Because it is unique to have it play out in a comic book. Everything else is live action, why not make a part of a comic book episode reading a comic book? The grinner himself is great. Yes, borrows from the joker but he is supernatural and has a different look so it is somewhat different. The parents are delightfully trailer park. The over the top teacher when he says "this is no laughing matter" and is all of a sudden grabbed and made to laugh was just cute irony. The episode has a great soul to me. Of course, it isn't real that someone can get famous for something like this but it is a nice dream.
This was my fav episode 😅
What was it about this story that affected you more than any other?
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow I didn’t know the name of this episode until last year lol. I was looking for it 😂. Idk maybe just cause it kinda seems realistic in a sense. Like an old place that had a spooky haunting feel to it 🤷🏻♀️
Are you afraid of the dark? second revival series ran from Oct 11th 2019-- Aug 13th 2022 and here's how I rank the seasons. 3. Season 1: Carnival Of Doom 2019 with 3 episodes 2. Season 2: Curse Of The Shadows 2021 with 6 episodes 1. Season 3: Ghost Island 2022 with 4 episodes
I wonder what object inspired "Room For Rent"? Presumably, "C7" was inspired by a jukebox. Good luck lugging that to the infamous clearing, lol. All Sam stories also have a heavy love story element, aside from Watcher's Woods, unless I misread Kelly and Sarah's relationship? Thanks for posting another amusing and well-written vid! #90sKid #AYAOTD
Haha! I mean, if there is one thing I know about Jewel Staite, it's that anyone could fall in love with her.
This episode could have been great if they did more backstory on the 50s characters and made us feel for them. But as is it's mid at best.
That's all I'm asking for. Just one less scene of Jason fixing the jukebox and one more scene of ghost backstory!
3:35. How did that not inspire them? Shia screaming always motivates me.
In a perfect world, all of my Shia clips would motivate Shia to actually appear in one of my videos. The best part is, I don't even know when or why I started using that clip exclusively for AYAOTD reviews, but it's now my favorite running gag.
Cool video. Are you afraid of the dark is the best!
Heck yeah, it's the best!
C7 you sunk my battleship
This may seem like a weird connect the dots moment, but when I made that joke in the script, it also made me think of the commercials for the Crossfire game. It had nothing to do with Battleship, but when I think of board games from that era, that commercial always pops into my head.
Good stuff dude 😆✅✅- this is Gold yo 🤣😆🤣😆
Thank you!!!
These reviews remind me of an old channel that's dead..."The long haired creepy guy". I miss him, we even had a nice talk on his page a couple times. Hope he's okay...
I am unfamiliar with the channel. Are his videos still on UA-cam? I'll have to check them out.
Great job! Not much of a scary story, but I liked it. Jukeboxes fascinated me growing up (especially when lit up), and it probably started with this episode. By the way, thanks for including the "Lisaaa!" at the end. AYAOTD parents rarely had a sizable role in the story, but Ellen sold her scenes. That last one especially got me as a kid.
For sure, she was probably one of the best parents on the show. Both for her acting and just the way she interacted with the kids.
I’m cold🥶🤣
Every time a kid wakes up to a sound outside at night on this show, that is the only thing I can think about.
This was one of the episodes I barely remember watching from its original run. It's not scary and barely has any memorable moments. I think I remember the juke box but that's about it.
Sounds like we are on the same page for this one. Aside from the solid acting, I think it is a very forgettable episode.
I thought this episode was a little scary as a child; and I like the location of the episode, though it could have been used better. The ending didn’t quite make sense, but it’s a kids show. Despite its problems, I like this episode.
Yeah, I doubt that any kid watching this show was ever hyper-analyzing the plot.
Another fantastic & in-depth review! Yep, this episode definitely borrowed previous story ideas from Dark Music and Water Demons specifically. While the story was a bit inconsistent like you explained; I actually enjoyed the episode. The acting from the family was solid. The adults in this episode was actually used nicely IMO. Lastly, I have to disagree on the scares. The point-of-view camera shot of the ghost coming out of the lake & moving towards the inn was pretty scary when I was a child. The background music added little more tension to it as well.
I suppose I could see a kid getting scared by the "Raimi-cam." I have a hard time seeing it because, one, I never saw this episode as a child and , two, I was exposed to some seriously scary stuff by my mom before I ever saw AYAOTD so I found the show quite tame, even when I was younger.
I got your indian reference and yes my back hurts
Simple man here...I see A video on my favorite kids game show of all time: W.I.T.W.I.C.S I WILL CLICK THE HELL OUT OF THIS VIDEO SHARE, AND LIKE IT.
And I appreciate you!
For me, analyzing this from just a story perspective, it met and meets my approval. I liked the way the villain was trying to trick Jake, doing so through a play and using getting into character as the reason why Jake was changing was quite good deception. I liked the folklore elements and loved the trade element as the twist and really enjoyed the this is real element for a play. One of the stronger episodes of the series for me.
Erin definitely was a clever villain.
My childhood! Very humorous and well made vid, acting as a companion piece to a walk down memory lane! Thanks for posting! #90sKid
Thank you! I had a lot of fun making this one.
@@JackOfAllNerdsShow It shows. Fun show, fun people, fun review! #nostalgia
That music at the end and intro still gets lol
Can you do some Goosebumps espsiodes.
I am working my way through the entire series of AYAOTD going in the American Release order. Once I have finished it, I will be moving on to Goosebumps and doing the same thing.
Can you also do the one when about the summer camp something about the woods. Also the one about keke when she got dress looking like a girl not a tomboy. Also Amanda is from the show Ready or Not. I hope they bring that back to UA-cam. Funny her name was Amanda on that show.
Here is the one for Watcher's Woods: ua-cam.com/video/GiEAKdUd5-g/v-deo.htmlsi=T8S-aLSI9muPOSZk
Can you do the one about the apartment 213.
I have done that one already. ua-cam.com/video/HvEudRYMJmU/v-deo.htmlsi=OdOVQuLo_ddkPVwr
Major fan of this show #DisneyDiva ❤
Can you do wild and crazy kids
Nice suggestion! I loved Wild & Crazy Kids.
@JackOfAllNerdsShow the other show I was thinking of I think it was called Finders Keepers or something like that. Maybe you can look into that show 2.
They should get another black actress similar to play the part..
I vote for Janet Hubert Whitten, who played the first Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for the first three seasons of the show from 1990-1993.
Love how you dress that part.
Thank you!
Can you do what will you do.
Can you do Hidden pictures or something like that. Also that video game shows. Also guts.
I will look into those. My next retrospective will probably be on a non-game show though to break things up a bit.
Rip Linda ❤ #DisneyDiva Can you do Cash Box next and Figure Out.
I was so happy to hear you mention Stardust. That is one of my all time favorite movies.
Heck yeah! I love Stardust. It is right up there with The Princess Bride for me.
I would love if you did ranks for each season and maybe a rank list of the entire series when your done with all of it. Also i just found out about another another horror anthology show for kids call the haunting hour if your curious.
I will definitely do the other seasons and doing a ranking of the entire series is a great idea. I have heard of the Haunting Hour but never saw it. I think it was after my time watching that kind of stuff, but I'm not opposed to covering it if I can find it. The plan is currently to move on to Goosebumps after finishing AYAOTD.
Jane’s Addiction…no shit? No wonder I loved that theme song so much. Even though I think for the duration of the show’s run, my music collection consisted of dubbed copies of my dad’s Beatles tapes, and that Rockapella album.
Yeah, that's crazy! I loved hearing about the origin of the theme song.
I work in a kitchen and I would say it is hard to hear people, especially if theyre in ventalation shafts
Well, they have to change the song a little bit. The old version has a line that goes "from Chicago to Czekoslovakia... and back!", which doesn't exist anymore. However, it can be fixed to "from Chicago to Czechia, Slovakia... and back."
Of course! Make the lyrics geographically and geopolitically correct, but you can't lose that sound and it looks like you already made it work. You're hired for my reboot that will never happen!
Watched this as a kid, didn't understand it at first. Caught on I don't remember when. My favorite episode of the whole series and quite frankly one of the most well executed inventive ideas I've ever watched.
They asked the kids what they wanted in a game show. Turns out, they yearned for a cappella singing & beat boxing. 😂
It's something that more game shows could stand to include. Could you imagine Rockapella doing the Jeopardy theme song?
Lynn Thigpen. I watched the Warriors growing up and I thought to myself "Wait a minute, there's something familiar about that voice and those lips." LOL
Holy crap, that was her! That just blew my mind.
It's a shame Scarecrow had so little screentime cuz this is probably where he's on his A-game. Most of the time on this show Jon's kind've just a loudmouth little punk who Bman needs to just get over his toxin and kick the crap out of him. But here, Jon manipulates the entire situation which leads Bman down a rabbit hole of being stuck at Arkham & seen as just another lunatic. Bman is practically rendered insane for most of this episode & barely functional due to this new batch of fear toxin. Even while defeating Crane, he's still hallucinating. He has to cope with the toxin, not just get over it. Crane comes SO CLOSE to winning here & is actually kinda menacing. His voice acting here is pretty good too. The whole "oh it's worse than that. It's MUCH worst than that" gave me chills. Ah Henry Pollic II you underrated gem.
Yeah, I didn't care for how much of Crane's time was taken by the Asylum doctor.
